The Host - James E. Smith, aka Smitty

James Smith, or as he is better known by so many, “Smitty”, has been involved in the sport of boxing for nearly 40 years. He kind of grew up in it as a young boy chasing The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, around the famed 5th Street Gym on Miami Beach where Smitty would eventually train himself in the ring and as a broadcaster. This dual training blossomed into a long career covering “The Sweet Science”, calling hundreds of championship fights in the U.S. and around the world and currently hosting America’s only syndicated boxing TV program IN THIS CORNER.

Smitty combines a very unique blend of boxing and broadcasting experience having been an on-air radio and TV personality since 1985 after actually fighting professionally for 3 years in South Florida in the early ‘80s. This rare combination gives Smitty a very unique style and insight for boxing fans the world over. Smitty has called fights of a legend like Roberto Duran of yesteryear to Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko of today. He has interviewed fighters from Archie Moore, Floyd Patterson, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Sugar Ray Leonard, Tommy Hearns, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather and that’s only just to name a few.

This wealth of knowledge and experience makes Smitty at the very top of the list in terms of real boxing experts, from breaking down and dissecting a fight from ringside, to interviewing a great fighter about his life and career and this is why he has been referred to many times as a true Boxing Guru. It takes one to know one and Boxing Historian Bert Randolph Sugar may have said it best on a radio interview when he made the statement “Smitty has one of the best pairs of eyes in the sport of boxing”.

Smitty has built up such a solid reputation and respect with the greatest fighters on the planet that they actually climb inside the squared circle with him on IN THIS CORNER to demonstrate the tremendous skills that have made all of them World Champions and many of them legends of the Sweet Science. Smitty plans to expand this with a separate legends segment of IN THIS CORNER in the future and he is just about to complete a screenplay that centers around Boxing coming later this year. Smitty was born in Miami Florida and now resides where else…in the Mecca of boxing Las Vegas, Nevada.
